- I'm thinking about buildingHow much does custom contractor software cost, and what do I still pay after launch? There's no honest universal number — anyone quoting a price before mapping your workflow is guessing. What is knowable is the cost structure: a one-time build cost (discovery, design, build, migration, integrations) and a much smaller ongoing operating cost (hosting, third-party services, support and changes you choose to make).
- I'm thinking about buildingCan custom contractor software integrate with QuickBooks?Usually yes. Intuit publishes a developer platform and API for QuickBooks Online, and custom systems are commonly built to exchange data with it. Desktop versions and specific data types have their own constraints, so capability should be confirmed for your exact QuickBooks product before anything is promised.
- I'm thinking about buildingWho owns the code and business data in a custom system? It depends on your agreement — and that is the honest answer, not a dodge. Ownership of custom software is not one thing you either have or don’t. Business data, source code, the repository, hosting, the domain, API credentials, third-party accounts and documentation are each controlled separately, and each can be assigned differently in a contract.
- I'm thinking about buildingWhat happens if the person who built my software disappears? The honest answer isn’t “don’t worry, we’re not going anywhere.” Every builder — a solo developer, an agency, an in-house employee, us — can become unavailable. Illness, a career change, a business closing, a falling out. Reassurance is not a plan.
- I'm thinking about buildingWhat does custom software maintenance cost each year? There is no honest universal number, and no universal percentage. A simple internal tool with one integration and a mission-critical system with six integrations do not share a maintenance profile, and quoting a single figure for both would be a sales tactic rather than an answer.
- I'm thinking about buildingHow long does it take to build custom software for a contractor?Timeline depends on scope, and any builder who gives you a duration before understanding your workflow is quoting a sales number. We’re not going to publish one here, because it would be a guess dressed as a commitment.
- I'm thinking about buildingWhen should a contractor NOT build custom software? Most contractors should not build custom software. If your process isn’t settled, if a mature platform already fits, if configuration or an integration would solve it, if the problem isn’t expensive enough to be worth solving, or if your team can’t support the implementation — building is the wrong move, and an expensive one.
- I'm thinking about buildingWho builds custom contractor software in Idaho? You have more options than “hire a local developer,” and the right one depends on your workflow rather than your zip code. An Idaho contractor can work with a local custom builder, a national development firm, a contractor-specific SaaS product configured properly, a no-code or low-code system set up by a specialist, an integration partner connecting tools you already have, or an in-house build. Adler Custom Systems is one of those options, not the default answer.
- I'm thinking about buildingWhat should an Idaho contractor ask before hiring a software builder?Ask the questions whose answers are expensive to discover later: who owns the data and the code, who controls hosting and the domain, which system is the source of record for your accounting, how crews will test it in the field, what the estimate assumes, what you keep paying after launch, and what happens if the builder becomes unavailable.
- I'm thinking about buildingShould you build or buy your company's CRM?If an existing CRM handles most of your workflow without forcing major compromises, buying is usually the better decision.
